12 Things You Must Know Before Building A Composite Deck

12 Things You Must Know Before Building A Composite Deck in 2025

Composite decking continues to rise in popularity across Metro Vancouver—and for good reason. With its impressive durability, modern aesthetics, and minimal upkeep, it’s a smart long-term investment for your outdoor space. But not all composite decking is made equal, and understanding your options before building is key to getting the most out of your deck.

Whether you’re in Coquitlam, Burnaby, North Vancouver, or anywhere in the Lower Mainland, here’s what you need to know in 2025 before starting your composite deck project:

Types of Composite

The composition and quality of composites vary widely. Most are a mix of recycled plastics and reclaimed wood fibers. They are available in either non-capped, partially capped, or fully capped varieties. Some ‘composites’ on the market have no wood fibers at all.

1. Non-capped Composites

These are made from a wood fiber and plastic mix, shaped into boards. While affordable, they’re vulnerable to moisture and don’t resemble natural wood very well. This type has largely been phased out due to early durability concerns.

Some manufacturers such as MoistureShield and TimberTech still carry these budget-friendly boards. Check out our guide on how composite decking has changed for more insight.

2. Capped Composites

Capped composites feature a PVC layer around 1–4 sides of the board for added protection against moisture, UV damage, and scratches. Brands like TimberTech even protect the grooved fastener notches.

3. Pure PVC Decking

Deck boards made entirely from plastic, like Azek, offer ultra-durability and zero organic material. These are lightweight, low-maintenance, and built for longevity—often backed by 30+ year warranties.

Composite decking comes in different board types, each with pros and cons:

4. Solid Boards

These mimic traditional wood and offer maximum strength and rigidity.

5. Slotted Boards

These allow hidden fasteners for a clean look. Just ensure the notches are capped to prevent water penetration.

6. Ridged Boards

These have hollow cuts underneath to reduce weight. Only one side is usable.

7. Hollow Boards

Lighter and more affordable, but they look less like real wood. End caps are essential to keep out pests and debris.

8. Choosing a Colour

While color may be a personal choice, it plays a role in function and heat retention. Stick with established manufacturers like TimberTech, Azek, or Trex for reliable fade resistance and warranty support.

Ask yourself:

  • Will the deck extend my indoor living space?
  • Should it blend with the landscape?
  • Will the railings match my home’s trim and style?

Composite Deck Construction Tips

9. Permits

Before building, check whether your city requires a permit. Use our handy Deck Permit Guide to help you get started.

10. Joist Spacing

Composite decking needs more support than wood. Follow 16″ on center spacing—or 12″ for diagonal layouts. Also consider waterproofing your joists for long-term durability.

11. Underdeck Usability

If you’re adding a dry area beneath the deck, systems like TimberTech DrySpace help create clean finishes and functional storage or lounge space.

12. Don’t Go It Alone

Partnering with a professional can save you money, headaches, and ensure warranty protection. Citywide Sundecks specializes in composite deck installation across Metro Vancouver.
