5 Fall Deck Maintenance Tips to Get Ready for Winter in Metro Vancouver

Metro Vancouver’s rainy season is no joke. Leaves pile up, water pools, and if you’re not careful, your deck can take a hit. Whether you’re in Burnaby, Coquitlam, or Surrey, fall is the time to prep your outdoor space. Here are five quick, practical maintenance tips to keep your deck safe, dry, and looking sharp until spring.

1. Clear Off Leaves and Debris

Fallen leaves may look nice, but if they sit too long, they trap moisture. That leads to stains, mold, and even rot. Sweep your deck weekly—or more if trees are nearby. Pay close attention to corners, railing edges, and around posts.

2. Check for Drainage Issues

Look for standing water. If your deck isn’t draining properly, that water could seep into your structure and cause long-term damage. Clear out blocked gutters and make sure downspouts direct water away from the deck.

3. Inspect for Rot and Soft Spots

Take a walk around your deck and press down on the boards with your foot. Soft or bouncy spots could mean wood rot is starting. For composite and vinyl decking, check seams and edges where water might seep in.

4. Re-Seal Exposed Wood

If you’ve got wood railings or wood decking, fall is the time to apply a fresh sealant. Aim for a dry stretch of at least 48 hours after application so it can cure fully. This helps protect against winter moisture and UV damage.

5. Tighten Loose Railings and Boards

Cold weather makes wood shrink. That can loosen fasteners, especially on older decks. Take 30 minutes to check for any loose screws, nails, or wobbly railings. Tighten them up now to avoid bigger problems later.
